When I discovered the word "trainspotter" in an application, it immediately sparked my curiosity. You often see them at the edge of railway tracks: observers wearing high-visibility vests, equipped with cameras and massive telephoto lenses on tripods. According to Wikipedia, their purpose is the "hobby of observing/filming trains."
To dive deeper into the world of these hobby hunters, I watched trainspotting videos on YouTube and clicked through several forums within this community, where spotters showcase their "prey" online. There, I also read the phrase that "there is nothing more beautiful in the world than trains." However, my research also led me to a darker side of this fascination…
I came across the crime novel "Overrun" (Überrollt) by Harald Hechler. This grippingly written novel recounts the fatal fates of a trainspotter and other unwelcome individuals. What had happened?
Fiction and Reality: The Dark Side of Spotting
The plot of the novel is disturbing: spotter Günther, alias "Nikongott", is "shredded" by a diesel locomotive on the KBS 650 line. According to the train driver, he was sitting calmly on the tracks – suicide? His spotter friend Thomas doubts this. When the memory card is missing from Günther's secured Nikon camera, Thomas becomes suspicious. Through meticulous and nightly investigations, he uncovers six other similar accidents. The railway police dismiss him, but he manages to win over Detective Inspector Nina to his cause.
The story quickly morphs into an action thriller reminiscent of James Bond. Thomas turns from the hunter into the prey. The killer contacts him, threatening him with the same fate. It leads to a final showdown by the railway tracks, where the killer intends to execute Thomas. However, Nina shoots and wounds the attacker, Thomas saves himself at the absolute last second, and the killer is quite literally left behind – hit by a night train from Basel.
His motive? A former train driver, whom "Nikongott" Günther had photographed in the driver's cab just as he was reaching for a bottle of alcohol. The photo triggered fierce comments in the forum and destroyed the man's livelihood: his job was gone, and he spiraled into social welfare. He mutated into a biblical god of vengeance, determined to ruthlessly "overrun" Günther and all the commenters. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. A gripping piece of fiction that nevertheless contains an important warning.
The Moral of the Story: Safety First!
Even though this is a fictional story, it sheds light on the potential dangers of trainspotting. The fascination with railways is immense, but the tracks are not a playground. Accidents can be fatal and have far-reaching consequences for everyone involved, especially the train drivers.
The message to be drawn from this fictional yet cautionary tale is universal: "Don't drink and drive" may be the standard cliché, but in the context of railway safety, it means:
Stay away from the tracks, always act with the utmost caution, and respect the enormous forces and speeds at play here.
The hobby may be fascinating, but safety must always come first – for trainspotters, railway employees, and everyone else.

Kein tödlicher Unfall? Einblick in den Erlebnisraum von Eisenbahnfans

Als ich in einer Bewerbung das Wort „Trainspotter“ entdeckte, weckte das sofort meine Neugier. Man sieht sie ja öfter am Rande von Gleisanlagen: Beobachter in Warnwesten, ausgerüstet mit Kameras und riesigen Teleobjektiven auf Stativen. Ihr Ansinnen, so die Wikipedia-Definition, ist das „hobbymäßige Beobachten/Filmen von Zügen“.
Um tiefer in die Erlebniswelt dieser Hobbyjäger einzutauchen, sah ich mir Trainspotter-Videos auf YouTube an und klickte mich durch einige Foren dieser Community, wo Spotter ihre „Beute“ online präsentieren. Dort las ich auch den Spruch, dass „es nichts Schöneres auf der Welt gibt als Züge.“ Doch meine Recherche führte mich auch zu einer düsteren Seite dieser Faszination…
Ich stieß auf den Krimi „Überrollt“ von Harald Hechler. Dieser packend geschriebene Roman berichtet von dem tödlichen Verhängnis eines Trainspotters und anderen unliebsamen Personen. Was war geschehen?
Fiktion und Realität: Die dunkle Seite des Spotting
Der Plot des Romans ist verstörend: Spotter Günther, alias „Nikongott“, wird an der KBS 650 von einer Diesellok „zerfetzt“. Laut Lokführer saß er ruhig auf dem Gleis – Suizid? Sein Spotter-Freund Thomas zweifelt daran. Als der Speicherchip in Günthers sichergestellter Nikon fehlt, schöpft Thomas Verdacht. Mit Akribie und nächtlichen Ermittlungen stößt er auf sechs weitere, ähnliche Unfälle. Die Bahnpolizei weist ihn ab, doch Kommissarin Nina gewinnt er für seine Sache.
Die Story mutiert schnell zu einem Action-Thriller à la James Bond. Thomas wird vom Jäger zur Beute. Der Killer kontaktiert ihn, droht ihm das gleiche Schicksal an. Es kommt zum Showdown an einem Bahngleis, wo der Killer Thomas exekutieren will. Doch Nina schießt ihn an, Thomas rettet sich in letzter Sekunde, und der Killer bleibt buchstäblich auf der Strecke – von einem Nachtzug aus Basel erwischt.
Sein Motiv? Ein vormaliger Lokführer, den Nikongott Günther am Führerstand fotografiert hatte, als dieser gerade zur Schnapsflasche griff. Das Foto löste im Forum heftige Kommentare aus, zerstörte die Existenz des Ertappten: Job weg, in Hartz IV abgestürzt. Er mutierte zum biblischen Rachegott, der Günther und alle Kommentatoren gnadenlos „überrollen“ lassen wollte. Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn. Eine packende Fiktion, die jedoch eine wichtige Mahnung enthält.
Die Moral von der Geschichte: Sicherheit geht vor!
Obwohl es sich hier um eine fiktive Geschichte handelt, wirft sie ein Schlaglicht auf die potenziellen Gefahren des Trainspottings. Die Faszination Eisenbahn ist groß, doch die Gleise sind kein Spielplatz. Unfälle können tödlich enden und haben weitreichende Konsequenzen für alle Beteiligten, insbesondere die Lokführer.
Die Botschaft, die man aus dieser fiktiven, aber warnenden Erzählung ziehen kann, ist universell: „Don’t drink and drive“ mag das Klischee sein, aber im Kontext der Bahnsicherheit bedeutet es: Bleiben Sie den Gleisen fern, agieren Sie stets mit höchster Vorsicht und respektieren Sie die enormen Kräfte und Geschwindigkeiten, die hier wirken.
Das Hobby mag faszinierend sein, aber Sicherheit muss immer an erster Stelle stehen – für Trainspotter, Bahnmitarbeiter und alle anderen.
